Summary of Unit

Welcome to Mr. Bates' math class. During this year you will learn how to use graphs, tables and algebraic techniques to understand functions. You will be introduced to the basic functions and be expected to recognize the basic functions and draw them. You will also be expected to use these functions and the family of functions to problem solve. Concepts such as domain, range, zeros, intercepts, and maximum and minimum values will be used to graph functions. You will also use the concept of average rate of change by looking at graphs and table of values to compare functions. Some projects that I will use are an activity dealing with the stock market to help teach the concept of looking at a graph and noticing general trends. I will also use a couple of quizzes and a couple of activities involving the SmartBoard. By the end I will expect you to be able to derive a graph from an equation and interpret the characteristics of a graph. You should be able to compare how graphs and equations relate and the importance of using both graphs and equations in everyday life. I know that this may sound like a lot to learn but the year will seem to fly by with all the fun we'll have.

Establish Goals: (G)
Maine Learning Results: Mathematics- D. Algebra
Functions and Relations
Grade 9-Diploma
4. Students understand and interpret the characteristics of functions using graphs, tables, and algebraic techniques.
c. Use concepts such as domain, range, zeros, intercepts, and maximum and minimum values.

What understandings are desired?

Students will understand that: (U)
•Functions and graphs are related.
•There is more than one way to solve an equation.
•Graphs are useful in the real world.

What essential questions will be considered?

Essential Questions: (Q)
•How do functions and graphs relate?
•Why is it important to be able to use both graphs and functions?
•How are graphs used in the real world?

What key knowledge and skills will students acquire as a result of this unit?

Students will know: (K)
Students will be able to do: (S)
•Terminology- domain, range, intercept, xy-axis, zeros, maximum, minimum, slope
•Formulas- know the graphs of: x^n with n=1, 2, or 3, ax^2+bx+c, sqrt(x), abs(x), a/x, a^x, kx+b
•Definitions- function, graph, equation
•Derive a graph from an equation.
•Interpret the characteristics of functions using graphs, tables, and algebraic techniques.
•c. Use concepts such as domain, range, zeros, intercepts, and maximum and minimum values.
•Compare how graphs relate to equations (and equations to graphs).
•Consider how graphs are used in the real world.
•Recognize the graphs of the basic functions.

Performance Task:

You and your colleagues have been hired as stock brokers by a group of wealthy clients. Your clients are looking to invest $100,000 and expect you to help them pick the right stocks so that they will make the most money. They come to you to find out which stock they should invest it. They will give you 2 weeks to collect data on stocks and after the two weeks are up they expect you to convince them to invest in the stocks you choose. When they first come to you, you will have to pick 3 to 5 stocks and research some past data for at least 2 weeks. You should make a data table and graph depicting the stocks you chose and a brief explanation of which stock you are going to invest the money in and how much you are investing in each one. At this point you are to keep track of the stocks you invested in for two weeks. At the end of the two weeks your investors are going to meet with you and you are to convince them that you are making them money.

Expectations

Even though you will not be graded on attendance I expect you to show up to every class. If you miss a class then you are to check the class folder located next to my desk for papers that you may have missed. You can talk to me or your fellow peers to get the assignments and I would be more than glad to share with you any notes for the class missed. Any assignment given on a day you are absent will have the due date pushed back for you.

I expect homework to be turned in on time. I will accept late homework however if you make a habit out of turning in homework late I will ask for a meeting between your parents and myself. I allow you to redo any assignment provided that you pass it in a week after you get it back.

I encourage you to work with your peers while doing homework. They are a valuable resource however if I find that someone is just copying another student's work there will be severe consequences including a 0 on the assignment.

If you ever have any questions feel free to contact me at anytime and I can make special accommodations.

Benchmarks

Below is the point value for each assessment and how your grade will be determined. Your grade will be based off a percent of points earned from 450.

Stock Market Project (150 points for project and 100 points for the presentation)
You and your colleagues have been hired as stock brokers by a group of wealthy clients. Your clients are looking to invest $100,000 and expect you to help them pick the right stocks so that they will make the most money. They come to you to find out which stock they should invest it. They want to see 2 weeks of past data on 3-5 stocks and after then you will be able to invest their money how you see fit. You are then to keep track of the stocks for two weeks, at that point the investors will want to know how much money you have made. You will make a graph/data table for the past data and explain how you will invest the money. After that you will keep track of the stocks you chose for 2 weeks and then make a second graph/data table explaining how much you made on the stock market.

Participation (50 points)
You are expected to participate in class discussions. Also included in this grade is any reflective paper you will write including the paper on whether the stock market is a wise investment or not. Any pre-quiz will also be included in this grade and those will be graded on whether you did them or not.

Homework (40 points)
I will grade homework with either a check or a check minus. A check means that you passed it in and it was complete and a check minus just means you did not complete it. Any homework not completed can be redone and passed back in for a check.

Tests (100 points each)
You will have one test and it will be the last day before presentations. I will be worth 100 points..

Quizzes (40 points all together)
I will give a short quiz (5-10 minutes) every couple of classes to make sure you are following along and understanding the topics being covered. These quizzes will be worth 20 points each.

Grading Scale
